Pickers’ shock at urine bottle haul

LITTER collectors gathered 310 bottles of urine left on the roadside near Lockerbie this week.

It was double the amount found last year and they say there’s still another 100 discarded bottles to pick up.

Marjatta Wildwood, Helen Wright, Fiona Sloan, James Hunter, Heather Graham and Elspeth Henderson, who are all part of the Lockerbie Wombles and Warriors clean up group, rolled up their sleeves for a pick along the B7068 service road on Monday.

Afterwards Marjatta said: “I knew from previous experience that this is as hard as it gets for ‘litter’ around here, so I was apprehensive but I still underestimated the amount of time it would take to clean up just a few hundred metres of roadside along this road. We collected 310 bottles of pee and 22 bags of rubbish!

“The hard thing for me is that along that section of road there is still probably another 100 or more pee bottles and loads of rubbish left in the ditches and on the other side of the fences.”

She described it as an ‘eyeopener’ but explained it was rewarding for the group members to be making a positive difference.

But she also called for change to stop the roadsides locally getting any worse, adding: “I just wish that there were more and bigger bins for truck drivers and designated toilets everywhere they stop to deliver stuff.

“This was more than double of the number of pee bottles from last year.”
