A free new Youth Pop Choir project for young singers has started in Dumfries.
The first of a series of free pilot sessions for 11 to 18-year-olds was held in the Loreburn Hall last week.
The choir is seeking young singers who can belt out the chart-toppers.
Gary Cameron, who is one of Scotland’s leading composers for TV, film and theatre and is part of the Big Burns Supper group, is behind the project.
T he pilot sessions are designed to find keen youngsters with the potential to work on new music covers as a group – and then towards public performances. Gary, who has produced for the BBC, National Theatre of Scotland and is in hot demand throughout Scotland as a voice specialist, has been directing the adult membership of the Dumfries Community Choir since it re-started after lockdown.
Now, he is keen to give young people in the town a chance to shine with their voices too.
He said: “This is an exciting opportunity for us to uncover the next generation of talent and uncover the future of music in Dumfries.
“You don’t have to audition, and we focus on contemporary pop music like Harry Styles and Sia.
“Come along and give us a try and we will give your voice a good work out.”
Anyone who missed out this week can go along to other free sessions today and May 25 from 4pm to 5.30pm in the Loreburn Hall.
Book a place via the website at www.bigburnssupper.com.
The project is being tested ahead of the programme launch in September.
• Meanwhile, Dumfries Community Choir, which was set up in 2011 and has gone on to be much-loved in the town, is also inviting potential new members to come and join their training sessions.
As well as local events and welcoming the Olympic Torch to Dumfries, the choir has performed at events throughout
Scotland, including an appearance at Edinburgh Castle, and has sung for royalty.
Any adults who are interested in joining them should go along at 6pm on Tuesdays to the Loreburn Hall, where they’ll be made welcome.
Membership is open to anyone who wants to sing – and you are not asked to perform on your own.
